Side Story: Anime Recommendation

Set in a gothic fantasy world, this is a story of Teito Klein, an orphaned slave who became the top military student. However, an unexpected turn of events left him pursued by the forces of the Barsburg Empire. Now an escaping convict, Teito’s sheltered by the Church and its law of sanctuary. There he discovered many mysteries surrounding himself, the church and the empire itself. The fact that he might be connected to a dethroned king and the mystical stone god- the eye of Mikhael- made him the target of the empire more than ever. Fortunately, the Church is under the mystical 7 Ghost protection. Will Teito be free from the military’s clutch? Will he uncover the truth? Who are the 7 ghost? Teito’s path seems to have spiralled into an unexpectedly perilous path.

First of all, the anime has a lot of handsome men so girls can really have an eye candy adventure throughout the series. Even the priests have lots to offer. I like the fact that the story revolved around a mystery and the main protagonist, which is Teito, tries to uncover it along with his lost memory. The story also has established back stories. It shows how a certain character has reached his current situation. For example, it showed how Teito reached the military academy or how Frau became a bishop. Branch stories are also provided like the story of Verloren and how the 7 ghost sent by the chief god tries to keep him in place. There are still things that were not given any light (like how people become one of the 07 ghosts) so it might become confusing if you miss a single scene. A lot happens, so attention is needed to watch the series.

Although I like the plot, I am not sold to the character of Teito Klein. He may become better in a season 2 of the series but in the first season, he was clumsy and weak. He may have become the top military student and a person ‘strong enough’ to wield the power of Mikhael, but for me, he is someone who fails to control his own power and a person who needs a lot of saving. Along the way, he does ‘bromance scenes’ with other male characters. This happens quite a lot and I really find it distracting. Another thing that’s quite painful is how the season one ended with the watchers being left with a lot of questions unanswered.
